There are many different reasons why your loved ones may be more prone to falling out of bed now that they are a little older. Falls are concerning as they are one of the main reasons for injuries in individuals aged 60 and above, so knowing what increases the likelihood of them falling out of bed and how you can deal with it may be useful for you and your loved ones. Read on to find out more!
Existing Health Issues
Individuals who recently suffered a stroke or an intensive surgery may be more prone to falling from their beds. This is because their body is still recovering from their illness and may be a little weaker. Whilst recovering, what you can do is simply offer more assistance to your loved ones so that they may more safely enter and exit their bed.
Balancing Issues
As we age, we tend to suffer from balancing issues. This is normal, and it is likely due to the loss of muscles over time in a natural process known as ‘sarcopenia’ or simply, muscle loss. Hence, we may be less able to judge our ability to do simple tasks like reaching over the bed to grab a glass of water and may suffer a fall as a result.
Another condition known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo causes balancing issues due to the collection of inner ear fluid that results in dizziness or vertigo. To better deal with both issues, you may consider installing bed supports or railings so that your family members can have something to hold on to when they move around their bed. You may also consider the use of body pillows, which are large soft mattress-like devices that cushion any falls off the bed.
Medications
The medications that your family members may consume may also be a reason for an increase in dizziness and disorientation. At worst, some medications may even create a state of confusion, especially if the individual has pre-existing medical conditions such as dementia. Whilst some disorientation may be expected from the consumption of pills, if they result in severe balancing issues, this may be an issue to highlight to your medical professional. They may be able to offer alternative treatments or reduce the dosage of the medicine provided.
