Your retirement age loved one may be at risk for developing shingles if, in the past, they had chickenpox. Truth be told, at any age, this condition can develop. The virus is, however, more likely to reactivate in those over 60 years of age. Painful blisters are caused by shingles that can break open, burn, and itch.
Until the virus runs its course, appropriate treatments for shingles can help keep your loved one more comfortable. Here, we are going to give you a few tips to assist in keeping your aging loved one as comfortable as possible.
Use Distractions
To help your loved one concentrate on something other than their discomfort, try using some distractions. You may encourage them to read a book, watch a movie, work in the garden, etc.
Anti-Itch Medications/Treatments
To soothe itchy rashes, one common over-the-counter remedy is calamine lotion. To provide relief, an antihistamine ointment may be appropriate. Some people prefer homemade methods such as a mix of water and baking soda to make a paste. Obviously, these are all temporary solutions.
Oatmeal Bath
Strong soothing qualities are offered by the compounds in oats. Some of the itching your loved one experiences may be soothed by an oatmeal bath. It can also relieve skin inflammation around blisters. To remove infection-causing bacteria, particularly during this time, bathing is essential.
Cool Compresses
Since a burning feeling is generally associated with the blisters from shingles, one great way to counteract the sensations is with a cold pack or cool wet washcloth. Be sure, however, when using this method not to create further irritation by rubbing the blisters with the washcloth. It must be placed carefully. To continue providing relief, as often as needed, replace the cold compress.
Medical Treatment
All on its own, shingles will most often dissipate – eventually. But to help with faster clearing of blisters, medical treatments now exist. For your loved one, an option may be antiviral medications. Or a steroid might be prescribed by their doctor. The duration of your loved one’s symptoms may be shortened by their doctor’s recommendations.
Vaccines Are Essential!
There is a lot of talk about vaccines lately. This one, however, applies to the prevention of shingles. For people over the age of 50, the shingles vaccine is recommended. You’ll want to pay close attention to make sure your loved one completes the treatment because, several months apart, the vaccine is given in two doses (most commonly). To prevent future occurrences, the vaccine can even be taken by individuals who have already experienced shingles.
