Individuals with Parkinson’s disease often find difficulty with their balance and walking. This is because some of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include muscle tremors that may make muscle coordination a little more challenging. If you’re looking for coordination exercises for loved ones or yourself, we have compiled a list of activities that may help to improve muscle function. All of the exercises are designed to be inclusive for individuals of all levels of fitness, but if there is any discomfort or pain whilst carrying out any of these exercises, we recommend that you consult a medical professional.
Brisk Walking
The first thing you can do is incorporate walking into your daily routine. Keep your walks simple–we’re certainly not suggesting you pick up a challenging hiking trail. Maintain a comfortable but brisk pace and head out to enjoy the outdoors. Walking is a great starting exercise as it incorporates most of the muscle groups associated with balance and stability.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi was originally designed as a martial art, but more modern iterations also focus heavily on tests of balance in a series of slow and controlled movements. There are several different levels to the actions associated with Tai Chi suited to individuals of different capabilities. Tai Chi helps to promote leg strength and balance as well as a range of motion.
Yoga
Like Tai Chi, Yoga is another popular exercise that promotes strength and balance through a series of simple but challenging poses. Yoga is also associated with improved mindfulness which may help combat the symptoms of depression and anxiety commonly associated with Parkinson’s disease.
Jump Rope
Jump rope is commonly associated with an intense workout, but if done at a slow pace and in a shorter length of time, it can be an exercise that is inclusive for everyone. Jump rope improves hand-eye coordination and strengthens the calve muscles.
Balancing Exercises
There are many different forms of balancing exercises. The most basic involves simply raising your leg and holding the pose for as long as possible. You should always stand next to a chair or wall for support if you feel you are losing your balance. Whilst balancing sounds simple, you may initially feel shaky and unstable. But if you persist at balancing exercises regularly, you are certain to improve your coordination. Balancing exercises involve the whole body, so they’re a great all-around activity.
