Avoid Foods that Are High in Salt
Salt, or sodium, aside from seasoning food can also cause fluid retention in the body. This can worsen existing CHF symptoms since there already is fluid buildup throughout the body. More importantly, salt can raise blood pressure which is extremely dangerous for older adults with CHF.
High sodium content does not equate to the amount of salt that you put into your meals when cooking or at the dining table. In fact, sodium content can be high in many of your favorite foods that you wouldn’t think contain salt. For example, frozen dinners, instant pudding, canned entrees, cottage cheese, salad dressings, and vegetable juice. One very important thing to avoid is cured, canned, or smoked meats as well.
Include more Herbs and Spices
Instead of relying on salt to add flavor to your meals, consider adding more herbs and spices to your diet. They are readily available in both fresh and dried packages and can add a great depth of flavor in either form. Just make sure to avoid herb and spice mixtures that include high levels of salt.
Avoid Processed Grains
People with CHF should avoid processed grains as far as possible. Processed grains will include products like white rice, white bread, boxed cereals, and regular pasta. As far as possible, try to opt for a wholegrain option because these foods don’t have as much nutritional value per calorie. This is largely because they have already been stripped of all the beneficial and healthy fiber that can help with regulating blood sugar and eliminating cholesterol.
Substitute with Foods High in Fiber
Instead of having processed grains, choose foods that are high-fiber like wholegrain bread, pasta, and cereals. Examples that you can turn to include beans, lentils, fresh food and vegetables, quinoa, and bran.
